Anatomic Pathology focuses on diagnosing disease from tissues and cells, preserving and examining their structure to make a morphologic diagnosis. Histopathology is the microscope study of tissue architecture to identify disease processes. Cytology looks at individual cells from samples like smears to detect abnormalities. Autopsy involves the post-mortem examination of a body to determine disease and cause of death. Immunology, by contrast, deals with the immune system and tests that measure immune responses, such as antibody levels and immune cell function, which are typically handled in the clinical pathology or laboratory medicine domain. While immunohistochemistry uses antibodies to detect specific antigens in tissue and is a common technique within Anatomic Pathology, the broader field of Immunology isn’t considered a standard component of Anatomic Pathology.
